Building a Yak 54

Spent most of yesterday at a friend’s house building a Yak54 30" EPP sheet 3D ‘Trainer’.  Can’t wait to test fly.

This is what we started with.

Tape the enlarged plans together and tape them to the EPP so you can cut them out.

What the pieces look like when they’re cut out.

Hard to visualize if you’ve never seen control surfaces before but we decided to use glue hinges.  First you cut along the control surfaces then you bevel one side, we decided to bevel the top surface.  We tacked the wings and tail upside down on a board and spread a layer of E6000 adhesive along the seam.  Believe it or not the adhesive makes a nice little hinge.

We decided on a pattern for painting, masked and rattle-can painted.

Paint Job and most of the parts from above.  Just missing the control rods.

Total weight in grams give or take with most all the parts.  Just missing the control rods but that won’t add much.

Next it just needs to be assembled and then add the electronics.

Sailing with “The Purple Spinnaker”

Today we went for a little sale in honor of our friend, Laura.  What a gorgeous day!  Lots of good conversation, food and drink.  A new nickname maybe have been born today but more on that later…

We met Avalon the Catalina 36 at 11am and started the day off with some Mimosas and a toast to our friend Laura.

Absolutely gorgeous day and starting off we enjoyed a beautiful view of the city from the bay
Captain Rich took us for an easy motor across Elliot Bay to Blake Island where we tied up and had a nice lunch.

There wasn’t much wind for most of the trip but on the run home we found enough wind to fill the sails and enjoy gently cruising home.
… now for the tale of The Purple Spinnaker.  If I don’t come home tomorrow you all will know why, please tell my story.

The Purple Spinnaker was born from the harmless birthday with made by an innocent bystander, “What rhymes with purple?”

Whirly Ball

It’s starting to rain here in the PNW and what better way to spend the afternoon with your team then playing a little Whirly Ball.

My team didn’t win the championship because Christine and I fouled the opposing team which gave them enough points to win… but Christine got her shirt and I got to stand front and center for the picture.

Pony Time

This summer at the company picnic we waited nearly and hour so Tiana could ride a pony.  Last weekend we went to visit my parents and when the Seahawks were hopelessly destined to lose to the Packers my dad suggested we take the kids to see the ponies and afterwards Tata gave them their pumpkins.

Watch Live Olympics Video

This is the launching point for watching all Olympic video http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/index.html

The easiest way to get to the live and recorded Olympic videos is to use the "Enhanced Player".  Most of the videos have NO AUDIO COMMENTARY, which may be annoying to some but I think it’s pretty cool.

How do I get to the Enhanced Player?

1. Open the "Standard Player"  It looks like this:

2. You’ll be prompted to install Microsoft Silverlight, it takes a few seconds to download with broadband.
3. You’ll be prompted to enter a zip code and cable provider.
4. Once you get those out of the way you’re good to go and you should see the player.
5. Click on the "Enlarge Video" button and you get to see the video a little bigger but best of all you get some cool menus that make it easy to browse videos.

Use the "Explore Videos" menu to get around and find the videos you want.
Hover over the menu items for descriptions but here’s the summary from top to bottom:
– Live Video Control Room
– Olympic Sports – browse the sports by icon
– Most Watched – see Phelps get that 10th gold medal
– As seen on TV – hear the TV commentators
– Highlights

Festival of the River

This weekend we met some friends up in Arlington.  First we went to the festival where we heard some good music and witnessed part of a pow wow.  The rains started falling while the Knack was playing so we went to our friends’ cabin for some pizza and listening to records (vinyl) on a vintage cabinet stereo.

Go Fly a Power Kite

I met a friend yesterday and we planned to go fly RC planes but sometimes the weather has other plans.  Not that the weather was bad or anything, yesterday’s high was around 90°.  Rabbit Trail — If you’re from anywhere but the Northwest you’re probably wondering what the big deal about 90°?  Have a look at the chart at the bottom of the post.
Continuing with the story… so it’s sunny and hot, what more could you ask for when flying RCs?  Well, a little less wind would have been nice.  The type of plane we were flying was pretty light so we found ourselves fighting the wind more than anything.  Burton planned ahead and brought his Power Kite as a backup, and it’s a good thing he did.

Anything above 90 is nearing a record high:
